Varanasi: Mesorex bypass surgery has been started in the pediatric surgery department of IMS BHU. This will make the treatment of children suffering from obstruction in the veins of the liver easier. In medical terms, it is called Extrahepatic Portal Vein Obstruction (EHPVO).
Surgery has been done on two children in the last one month. Till now, due to lack of facilities, one had to go to Delhi, Lucknow. In a private hospital, one has to spend 4 to 5 lakh rupees, whereas in BHU, surgery is being done for only 15-20 thousand rupees.
Dr. Vaibhav Pandey of the pediatric surgery department said that surgery has been done on two children in the last one month. Last month, surgery was done on an 11-year-old girl and a 9-year-old boy from Bihar. Both are healthy. In the surgery, a part of the vein is cut from the neck of the concerned patient and used as a graft, and one part of it is connected to the liver and the other part to the intestinal veins.
Dr. Arvind Pandey of the Department of Cardiothoracic and Vascular Surgery (CTVS) says that Meso Rex bypass surgery relieves the child from the problem. MS Prof. KK Gupta called this type of surgery a boon for patients coming from Purvanchal.
What is EHPVO
EHPVO is a condition in which the vein carrying blood from the intestines to the liver gets blocked, causing serious complications. This also includes sudden and life-threatening bleeding. Dr. Devesh Kumar Yadav, Chairman of the BHU Gastro Enterology Department, says that many of these children come with the problem of vomiting blood, which can be fatal in many cases.
Surgery lasts for eight to ten hours
Chairman of the Department of Pediatric Surgery, Dr. Vaibhav Pandey said that Meso Rex bypass surgery takes 8 to 10 hours. In both the surgeries done in a month, Prof. RB Singh of the Department of Anesthesia as well as Prof. Vikram Gupta and Dr. Sanjeev, among others, played an important role. There are many risks involved during such a complex surgery. High level skills are required to manage them.
